Omantel Block(VoIP(YearsBack),VPN(NowOnwards))

The use of VPN by consumers has increased over the years as it is the only way for internet users in Oman to use VoIP services - which have been banned in Oman for a number of years now. Some VPN protocols such as PPTP are already completely blocked in Oman and providers of other VPN solutions are increasingly discovered by the ISP and are blocked on individual basis.

In the latest episode of internet censorship in Oman, the Telecom Regulation Authority of Oman has announced its plans to completely ban the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and would require companies to acquire the TRA's permission before they can use them.

BLock

In fact, as a business, you must pay an absolute fortune for a leased line here - the only way to get a static IP with Omantel (Omantel conveniently decided that ADSL connections could not have static IP's).

To give you an idea, an 8MB ADSL (and 0.5mb up) residential line is RO 99 a month(11946 Indian Rupees). A 1MB leased line (that's full duplex, up and down) is RO 1,725 a month (after RO 400 setup fee) (this falls to RO 1,294 a month if you commit to 3 years usage) so first month charges are INR 256433/- and after that monthly charges are INR 208163/-. You read that correctly - to get a Fixed IP (which is required by many corporate networks architecture) you need to spend so much money a month! And that is only for a 1MB connection - you can look at Omantel's rates here.

The fine, if you are caught, is significant - RO 500 for personal users, and RO 1000 for commercial users of VPN's. That's a large chunk of change. TRA will grant licenses for educational institutions and businesses, but you may not apply for a VPN license if you are a private user. There is no word on pricing from the TRA, nor is there any word on how long it will take to get a license granted, or how they will apply those licenses to the ISP's filtering processes.

To detect whether someone is using a VPN, there are a number of methods that can be employed to do this. The most obvious one is to just simply block the common ports that are used by popular VPN providers, which has already been done. After that it get's technical, and essentially what can be done is that a profile is looked for in the pattern of your internet traffic coming from your account. For example, if all the traffic coming from your account is being tunneled through one port, then that's an easy guess that you are using a VPN.

TechieDreamer Flying soon to Motherland for Vacation.. :)

Yes My Journey date was confirmed and booked the tickets for September 10th…

I don’t believe how the days went so fast, Its been a Year and three months in Oman. Its really a nice place to live.

In my early days I felt little inconvenient to adjust the new atmosphere, new people and new language.. it has taken a month time to me to get settle down here.

After that I got addicted to Internet as I got my company’s Laptop(Dell Vostro 1510) with 24Hrs internet. My day to day activities got scheduled and started going on timely manner.

Colleagues became friends and some of them thick friends also. we had a great time in week end outings, Beach Games,Group Dances, Birthday parties and Company get-together parties.

We enjoyed the time in beaches, roaming in mountains and desserts, Night time long drives with my Friend Vinod with 120kmph sometimes it will reach 160kmph on poor Picanto.. those journeys are really adventurous and excited.

And my languages list got updated to “Languages known: English, Telugu, Hindi, Tamil”  :) yes its not Arabic..

Lot more things to share but I don’t want to make you bore.

I can say I am lucky and happy to work here in Oman and visiting those places.

Okay Friends some how I tried here to share my feelings about Oman those all went well but on the flip side there are tough days which I spent with Missing my home, friends, and deep thinking about my career etc etc.. OoHhHh  its again a different story.

Gmail Improves "Undo Send"

Gmail has a very useful Labs feature called "undo send" that lets you "unsend" a message immediately after sending it. If you accidentally clicked on the "Send" button or you realize that you forgot to attach an important file, you have a few seconds to click on "undo" and continue to edit the message.

 gmailUndoSend

When Gmail launched this feature, you only had 5 seconds to undo sending a message, but Google constantly added new periods: 10 seconds, 20 seconds and now 30 seconds.
 gmail-undo-send

Probably a better idea would be to add an outbox, so that you can set a longer delay. Another benefit would be that you could also schedule sending an email message.

What IT Environment You want.. ITaS [TechieCloud]

  • Recently I came across the situation that requires a Web Application development Environment.. means I need to install the Web server, Data base server and several programming languages etc.. this whole setup is to do a moderately simple task, but I don’t want to give extra burden for my fully loaded Lappy.. moreover this installation and configuration process is again a bit lengthy process.. Then How ??
  • Sometimes I need to setup a test environment with Servers and client Systems. Again its  a big exercise to setup all the Servers, client Machines and network among them etc.
From these two situations I thought that if I could have a ready made systems with preconfigured all necessary applications at free of cost… It sounds great naa ??

Exactly Cloudshare providing the same thing with great choices. They are providing ITaS ( IT as a Service ) You can choose your IT environment how you would like to be. So you can have your IT Environment at your wish, and you can do what practical you want. one more exiting thing is you can setup your machines with in minutes..

How to run Scripts automatically in your System or Domain [scriptomatic]

Here I am taking the example for NUM LOCK status at System Logon.

The status of the NUM LOCK key is specific for each user. By default, NUM LOCK is turned off.

    Configuring the Script

To configure a script to change the NUM LOCK state, use the following steps:

    1. Start Notepad.
    2. Copy the following code, and then paste the code into the text file:
    3. Save the file as "numlock.vbs" (including the quotes). This properly creates the file with the .vbs extension. The icon changes from a Notepad icon to a script icon.
    set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

    WshShell.SendKeys
    "{NUMLOCK}"

Now our script was ready to be execute so how can we Execute this.. there are several way to execute automatically..

Running the Script from the Startup Folder

To configure the script to run locally, copy the Numlock.vbs file to the user’s Startup folder, which is normally found in the user’s profile path. To configure the script to run for all users, copy the Numlock.vbs file to the Startup folder in the All Users profile. The default path for this folder is Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.

Running the Script Through Group Policy

Note that to run the script through Group Policy, you must be using Windows XP Professional, not Windows XP Home Edition( Home editions not included the features like Group Policy and Domain environment etc) .

To configure the newly created script to run by using Group Policy, first copy the Numlock.vbs script file into the Group Policy logon script folder.

The default path for a local logon script is %SystemRoot%\System32\GroupPolicy\UserComputer\Scripts\Logon.

The path for a domain logon script is %SysVolFolder%\Sysvol\Sysvol\DomainName\Scripts.

After you copy the script to the appropriate location, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK to start Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

    2. On the Console menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.

    3. Click Add, click Group Policy, and then click Add.

    4. Click the appropriate Group Policy Object. The default selection is the local computer, but you can click Browse and select a different Group Policy Object.

    5. Click Finish, click Close, and then click OK.

    6. In the Group Policy Management snap-in, locate the User Configuration\Windows Settings\Scripts (Logon/Logoff) folder. (You can substitute the Computer Configuration folder for the User Configuration folder.)

    7. Double-click the Logon script object, click Add, click Browse, and then click theNumlock.vbs script.

    8. Click Open, and then click OK.

    9. Click OK, and then close the Group Policy Management console.I
Its really helpful to manage so many tasks automatically through scripts.

    System Administrator Appreciation Day..

    Here on this Great Day..

I got a Chance to express about My Profession.. Show  appreciation to your Sysadmin..

Friday, July 30, 2010, is the 11th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day. On this special international day, give your System Administrator something that shows that you truly appreciate their hard work and dedication.

A Sysadmin unpacked the server for this website from its box, installed an operating system, patched it for security, made sure the power and air conditioning was working in the server room, monitored it for stability, set up the software, and kept backups in case anything went wrong. All to serve this webpage.

A Sysadmin installed the routers, laid the cables, configured the networks, set up the firewalls, and watched and guided the traffic for each hop of the network that runs over copper, fiber optic glass, and even the air itself to bring the Internet to your computer. All to make sure the webpage found its way from the server to your computer.

A Sysadmin makes sure your network connection is safe, secure, open, and working. A Sysadmin makes sure your computer is working in a healthy way on a healthy network. A Sysadmin takes backups to guard against disaster both human and otherwise, holds the gates against security threats and crackers, and keeps the printers going no matter how many copies of the tax code someone from Accounting prints out.TechieDreamerSysAdminsDay A Sysadmin worries about spam, viruses, spyware, but also power outages, fires and floods.

When the email server goes down at 2 AM on a Sunday, your Sysadmin is paged, wakes up, and goes to work.

A Sysadmin is a professional, who plans, worries, hacks, fixes, pushes, advocates, protects and creates good computer networks, to get you your data, to help you do work -- to bring the potential of computing ever closer to reality.

So if you can read this, thank your Sysadmin -- and know he or she is only one of dozens or possibly hundreds whose work brings you the email from your Dear ones, the instant message from your son at college, the free phone call from the friend in Oman, and this Weblog.

Consider all the daunting tasks and long hours (weekends too.) Let's be honest, sometimes we don't know our System Administrators as well as they know us. Remember this is one day to recognize your System Administrator for their workplace contributions and to promote professional excellence. Thank them for all the things they do for you and your business.

Have a Great day and Happy Week end.

Cloud Providers DaaS, IaaS.. [ Techie Cloud ]

Here I am going list out some of the Cloud Provides.. from the list you can understand what the DaaS ( Desktops As a Service ), IaaS ( Infrastructure as a Service )..

    TechieDreamer Cloudvendors

Atlantis Computing offers its ILIO appliance, which it claims can shrink the storage footprint for virtual desktops by 20 times while increasing performance by a factor of 10. The company has an extensive partner list and does not attempt to offer a complete VDI solution itself.

Desktone offers the Virtual-D platform that allows enterprises to offer virtual desktops internally, as well as for service providers to host desktops off-site. The Desktone Access Fabric links these two worlds when needed. Desktone counts Citrix as an investor.

Viewfinity provides systems management, privileged management, and user migration using an underlying virtualization technology that encapsulates existing OSes and applications to facilitate these functions. The company needs to tighten its messaging around virtual desktops.

Virtual Computer claims that its NxTop product is the industry’s first “bare metal” client hypervisor that provides true isolation and great performance, two issues that can be tricky for enterprises adopting virtual desktops.

Neocleus also uses a bare metal hypervisor to create separate instances of Windows on a single machine so applications can be contained to a single operating systems. The company did a partnership deal with Big Fix earlier this year, and Big Fix was acquired by IBM in June.

Unidesk helps customers manage virtual desktops in VMware and Citrix environments. The company’s Composite Virtualization technology separates the operating system from the application and user personalization layers for easier management. Unlike many others in this roundup, Unidesk lists a few customers on its website.

Leostream has a Connection Broker product that leverages the infrastructure of virtualization providers like VMware, Citrix, Microsoft and IBM. Delivered as a virtual appliance, it manages the connection between end users and their virtual desktops and applications. Leostream also has a long customer list on its site.

Pano Logic offers a range of products and software tools that it bundles within the Pano System, including the Pano Device, a small network-connected “zero client” that has no CPU or operating system and simply connects to a Windows desktop image on a central server.

MokaFive which was founded in 2005 with a lot of noise around the concept of a LivePC has now focused squarely on the virtual desktop market. LivePCs are hosted locally, though they can be created, deployed and managed from a central location.

RingCube offers their vDesk solution which creates personalized workspaces. These workspaces can be hosted directly on a PC, a USB drive, a network drive, or through a virtual desktop hosted on a set of virtualized servers.

Tab Candy: Making Firefox Tabs Sweet

The power of the browser has grown substantially in the last ten years. We now use the Web to multi-task the activities we juggle every day, like vacation plans, purchases, sharing pictures, listening to music, reading email, and writing a blog post.

It’s hard to keep everything straight with dozens of tabs all crammed into a little strip along the top of your browser. Your tab with a search to find a pizza parlor gets mixed up with your tabs on your favorite band. Often, it’s easier to open a new tab than to try to find the open tab you already have. Worse, how many of us keep tabs open as reminders of something we want to do or read later? We’re all suffering from infoguilt.

We need a way to organize browsing, to see all of our tabs at once, and focus on the task at hand. In short, we need a way to get back control of our online lives.

    Enter: Tab Candy.

With one keystroke Tab Candy shows an overview of all tabs to allow you to quickly locate and switch between them. Tab Candy also lets you group tabs to organize your work flow. You can create a group for your vacation, work, recipes, games and social sites, however it makes sense to you to group tabs. When you switch to a grouped tab only the relevant tabs are shown in the tab bar, which helps you focus on what you want.

One more thing. Tab Candy is made entirely with HTML, Javascript, and CSS. There is no native code—just the open Web. That is how powerful the web has become.

Tab Candy is in early development. We’re at the point where we’d like more people to try it out and let us know what they think. There’s work to be done on some existing bugs and performance issues, and we’re building a motivated group to attack those issues head-on.

A Walkthrough of Tab Candy’s Features

Instant Overview—Never lose a tab again

Tap Option-Space on the Mac or Control-Space on Windows to zoom out and see thumbnails of all open tabs. Click on one to zoom back in. It’s a quick visual way to search for that one tab you need with work research or directions to the restaurant.

    Lightweight Grouping

Drag two tabs together to create a group to keep related tabs together. You can even name groups for all your videos, research, social sites or whatever you need. If need a group from one tab just click and drag to create one. You can easily rearrange tabs and drag them anywhere inside a group or between groups.

Right now there is no automatic grouping, but it is a feature we are working to deliver.

    Only the Tabs You Want

When you go to a tab in a group, you’ll only see the tabs from that group in the tab strip. That means you can focus on the task you are doing. Work tabs stay separate from play tabs. Clean tab bar, clean mind.

    Organize Your Space

Tab Candy is not just the ability to move tabs around, you can move groups so that they fit your needs. Make the group with your calendar and email bigger so that you can see what’s new just by zooming out to Tab Candy. Hide the group with distractions in a corner. Keep things to read in a long vertical list. Because Tab Candy is in early development, there are lots of user experience changes and bugs to fix. We want your feedback. While Tab Candy is fairly stable, it might still lose your groupings or cause Firefox to operate more slowly.

OpenStack: An Open source cloud project

Today one more Open Source Cloud Project has started the Journey..

OpenStack an open-source cloud platform, which hopes to compete with several proprietary cloud platforms including those being developed by Microsoft and VMware. RackSpace is spearheading the project and is donating the code that powers its Cloud Files and Cloud Servers to the OpenStack project. The project is also going to incorporate technology from the Nebula Cloud Platform developed by NASA.

    OpenStack_200.jpg-2f65a9098a7b1dd1

Here are the key components of the platform:

    • a fully distributed object store based on Rackspace Cloud Files. (Available now for download.)
    • a scalable compute-provisioning engine based on the NASA Nebula cloud technology and Rackspace Cloud Servers. (Available later this year.)

    Research Report: Defining

Internal Cloud Options: From Appistry to VMware

Using the OpenStack software, any company can turn physical hardware into an internal/hybrid cloud platform. The new open source platform, which is going to be made available under an Apache license, will be maintained by a not-for-profit organization. Rackspace and NASA are adopting the platform as well. In addition, Rackspace is going to funnel resources and developers into the project to support the adoption of OpenStack by corporations and service providers.

So far, the group has gained a lot of support, mostly from vendors. Nearly 25 companies (big and small) such as Intel, Citrix, Riptano, Dell, Cloud.com, AMD and Scalr have signed on for the new platform. An OpenStack Design Summit hosted by Rackspace was held July 13-16 in Austin, where more than 100 technical advisors, developers and founding members joined to validate the code and ratify the project roadmap.

How will you type the new Rupee symbol? [Techie News ]

Now that the Union Cabinet has approved the new symbol for the Indian Rupee designed by Indian Institute of Technology postgraduate D Udaya Kumar, the question in everyone's mind is how and when do we get to type the new symbol?

This isn't going to happen overnight. Ambika Soni, in the press conference held to announce the new symbol, said it might take up to a year for the new Rupee symbol to be used throughout India and about two years for international acceptance.

For widespread usage, the new symbol has to be accepted by the Unicode Consortium's Unicode Technical Committee that is responsible for the development and maintenance of the Unicode Standard, including the Unicode Character Database.

    rupekeyboard

India is a member of the Unicode Consortium and getting an approval for the new symbol shouldn't be too difficult. In fact the new symbol had been designed keeping in mind the ease with which it can be incorporated into the existing software systems.

The Unicode Technical Committee meets on a quarterly basis and the next meeting is scheduled for October.

Encoding in the Unicode Standard will also ensure encoding in the International standard ISO/IEC 10646 as both the organizations work closely with each other.

The symbol will also be included in the Indian Standards, viz. 13194:1991 – Indian Script Code for Information Interchange (ISCII), through an amendment to the existing list by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The ISCII specifies various codes for Indian languages for processing on computers along with the key-board lay outs.

While the Government of India can mandate hardware manufacturers to include the symbol in keyboards, it can also be accessed through assigned keyboard combination or via the operating system's Character Map, post approval from the Unicode Consortium. Software manufacturers can include the symbol in their new updates.

But you don't necessarily need to wait for the official standards approval to use the new Rupee symbol. Soon typographers will release fonts that include the symbol. But these fonts might not be universally supported.

Moreover, you can build your own font for the new Rupee symbol using free online font-creation tools.

Scientists unlock secret of Mona Lisa's face [Art]

    t1larg

Scientists have unlocked another Mona Lisa mystery by determining how Leonardo Da Vinci painted her near faultless skin tones.

Using X-ray techniques, a team "unpeeled" the layers of the famous painting to see how the Italian master achieved his barely perceptible graduation of tones from light to dark.

The technique used by Da Vinci and some other Renaissance painters to achieve this subtlety is called "sfumato," and unraveling it allowed the scientists to determined the composition and the thickness of the paint layers.

Philippe Walter, a senior scientist at the Paris-based Laboratoire du Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musees de France, told CNN: "This will help us to understand how Da Vinci made his materials... the amount of oil that was mixed with pigments, the nature of the organic materials, it will help art historians."

Walter and his colleagues used X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry to determine the composition and thickness of each painted layer of the Mona Lisa in the Louvre Museum in Paris, where the painting is normally kept behind bulletproof glass. Art historians believe it was painted by Da Vinci in 1503.

They found that some layers were as thin as one or two micrometers and that these layers increased in thickness to 30 to 40 micrometers in darker parts of the painting. A micrometer is one thousandth of one millimeter.

They believe this characterizes a technique of painting that uses a glaze, or very thin layer, to build up shadows in the face.

The manner in which Da Vinci painted flesh, "his softened transitions," were pioneering work in Italy at the end of the 15th century, say the researchers, and were linked to his creativity and his research to obtain new paint formulations.

Walter said it is almost impossible to see any brushstrokes on the Mona Lisa.

The research, which is reported in the journal Angewandte Chemie, also looked at several other Da Vinci paintings and could eventually help to determine when and how he painted some of his masterpieces.

However, Walter, added: "There is still plenty of mystery surrounding the Mona Lisa. This does not tell us why he painted, about his motivation, just about the materials."

Life in a Day [Google, Youtube]

Every day, 6.7 billion people view the world through their own unique lens. Imagine if there was a way to collect all of these perspectives, to aggregate and mold them into the cohesive story of a single day on earth.

Today, we’re excited to announce the launch of “Life in a Day,” a historic cinematic experiment that will attempt to do just that: document one day, as seen through the eyes of people around the world. On July 24, you have 24 hours to capture a snapshot of your life on camera. You can film the ordinary -- a sunrise, the commute to work, a neighborhood soccer match, or the extraordinary -- a baby’s first steps, your reaction to the passing of a loved one, or even a marriage.

Kevin Macdonald, the Oscar-winning director of films such as The Last King of Scotland, Touching the Void and One Day in September, will then edit the most compelling footage into a feature documentary film, to be executive-produced by Ridley Scott, the director behind films like Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Thelma & Louise, Blade Runner and Robin Hood. LG Electronics is supporting "Life in a Day" as a key part of its long-standing "Life’s Good" campaign and to support the creation of quality online content that can be shared and enjoyed by all.

The film will premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and if your footage makes it into the final cut, you’ll be credited as a co-director and may be one of 20 contributors selected to attend the premiere.

Want to take part? Here’s what to do.

    1. Visit the “Life in a Day” channel and learn more about the project. Be sure to read through the steps you need to take to participate and the guidelines for creating your video(s). Also check out some of the sample videos for inspirational ideas.

    2. On July 24, capture your day on camera.

    3. Upload your footage to the “Life in a Day” channel any time before July 31.
Regardless of whether your footage makes it into the final film, your video(s) will live on on the“Life in a Day” channel as a time capsule that will tell future generations what it was like to be alive on July 24, 2010.

Google Tests Multiple Accounts Sign in [Google]

Google tests a feature that allows you to sign in to multiple Google accounts in the same browser. Multiple sign-in only works for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Reader, Google Docs, Google Sites and Google Code, but it's likely that other Google services will be added when this feature will be publicly available.
If you use a service that doesn't support multiple sign-in, it will default to the first account that you signed in using your browser. Google suggests to use a different browser, but you can also use Chrome's incognito mode to sign in to an additional Google account.

Another limitation is that Gmail's offline mode is disabled if you turn on multiple sign-in.

    multiple-google-accounts

Multiple sign-in will let you open Gmail in multiple tabs, log in using different accounts and read the messages from all your accounts without opening another browser. Right now, you have to log out before logging in to a different account.

Everlasting Favorites of mine.. Sting - Desert Rose.. Bryan Adams - Here I Am.. [Music]

Sting – Desert Rose…  Its really a great song which I never ever get bored to listen anytime..

You can feel the intense of the lyrics..  I love those lyrics..

Especially in this song there is a wonderful humming and some part of singing with the Arabic Singer.. its really awesome..

    I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
    I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

    I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
    And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

    This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
    This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

    And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
    This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

    I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
    I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

    I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
    I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

    I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
    I wake in pain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

    Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
    This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

    Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
    This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall

Bryan Adams – Here I Am

This is one of my best favorite ever.. I like vary much this video

Here I am - this is me
There's no where else on earth I'd rather be
Here I am - it's just me and you
And tonight we make our dreams come true

    It's a new world - it's a new start
It's alive with the beating of young hearts
    It's a new day - it's a new plan
    I've been waiting for you
    Here I am

Here we are - we've just begun
And after all this time - our time has come
Ya here we are - still goin' strong
Right here in the place where we belong

    Chorus X1
Here I am - this is me
There's no where else on earth I'd rather be
Here I am - it's just me and you
And tonight we make our dreams come true

    Chorus X2
Here I am - next to you
And suddenly the world is all brand new
Here I am - where I'm gonna stay
Now there's nothin standin in our way
Here I am - this is me

    Microsoft Is Still Huge

    Microsofthydbld

Sure, Microsoft may have given away its lead and legacy in mobile and probably jumped into too many hyper-competitive sectors, but they still have the widest reach in technology. And they're still pretty damn successful.

In recent years, Microsoft may be a step or two behind, but they're relevant in nearly every sector. And with Office 2010, a new Xbox 360, Kinect, and perhaps most importantly, Windows Phone 7, all receiving substantial upgrades this year, 2010 is shaping up to be absolutely huge for them. And that's coming off a 2009 where Windows 7, Bing and the Zune HD were introduced. We're just so used to Microsoft being around that we sort of take them for granted for all the good that they do.

So Microsoft revealed some numbers to serve as a reminder:

    • 150 million Windows 7 licenses sold

    • 7.1 million projected iPad sales in 2010
    • 58 million projected netbook sales in 2010
    • 355 million projected PC sales in 2010

    • less than 10% of US netbooks ran Windows in 2008
    • 96% of US netbooks ran Windows in 2009

    • 16 million subscribers to the largest 25 US daily newspapers
    • 14 million Netflix subscribers
    • 23 million Xbox live subscribers

    • 173 million Gmail users
    • 284 million Yahoo Mail users
    • 360 million Windows Live Hotmail users

    • $5.7 billion Apple net income for fiscal year ending in Sept 2009
    • $6.5 billion Google net income for fiscal year ending in Dec 2009
    • $14.5 billion Microsoft net income for fiscal year ending in June 2009

Yes, they're patting themselves on the back a bit but the numbers are just staggering. If you've forgotten, now you know: Microsoft will always be a very, very big deal.

    Gmail Redesigned Contact Cards

Gmail's contact cards, which show up when you mouse over the sender of a message or a Gmail Chat contact, have a new interface. Action buttons are displayed at the bottom of the card and you can no longer edit the name of a  contact inline. When you click on the name of a contact, Gmail opens the contact manager.

    Gmail Address

Contacts cards haven't changed too much since 2007, when Google released a major Gmail update.

Ghadeer AL Jabel PopUp On Windows XP Logon

Recently I faced one strange problem with  all my Windows XP systems in my network  When we login the XP machines its giving the popup as below

    Ghadeer Al Jabel

and on the same system the floppy disk drive will keep on accessing.. and it will make continues noise..

why popup is coming on every logon..? why the floppy drive keeps on reading.. ??

    started working on the Issue..

I suspected one process commonly on all the XP systems those are giving same popup and FDD access called windows.exe

I googled about the process information then i came to know that windows.exe is a process which is registered as a trojan(Trojan.W32.Zotob). "This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data."

We can find More details about the windows.exe ( trojan ) in Threatexpert.com

So Immediately I ended the whole process tree from the TaskManger –> Processes then the floppy drive accessing was stopped… OHoHHhoH got some clue then i found the physical location of the windows.exe in c:\windows\system32 and I have deleted.. and restarted the system  but again its coming back then I have scanned whole system with MalwareBytesAntiMalware then the problem got resolved.. after all the discussions over the forums and Tech Sites I got the Cut Shot solution for the problem..

here I am giving you one tool for especially this PopUp, continues accessing of floppy and killing the windows.exe process

Download:GHADEER AL JABEEL PopUp Removal Tool…

Download the file run in your system,  sure it will resolve the issues….

Google Ignores the dots in gmail Id

I really amazed when i am typing my gmail id without dots  by mistakenly. its accepting without dots in my mail id….

I tried with some other combinations also still its accepting then i realized that we can use our gmail id without dots also it was going  to yOur mail..

this is my actual mail id

    gmaildot

By mistakenly I typed like this..

    googledot1

Its going to My mail box after that i checked with other one also like the below

googledot2 Still its going to My mail box ..

wanna try with your mail id !! okay just go to gmail.com and have a look at this with your gmail id..

    Google Saying That

It's important to keep in mind that Gmail ignores the dots from your username when receiving a message, so you'll get all the messages sent to subbuk@gmail.com, subbu.k@gmail.com, s.u.b.b.u.k@gmail.com and other similar addresses. The requirement to enter the same username you used when you created the Gmail account might have helped you keep the account secure, but it was really annoying.

The change is just for Gmail users only; Google Apps users for domains do require fidelity to the dots.

Up to 500GB Internet speed for 15000 INR !! Unbelievable

India is really advancing, keeping in mind the extreme complexity of Natural issues like hills, valleys, rain and humidity. BSNL seems to be able now to pump in max 500 GB through their lines. I'm not sure how much the old copper lines in India can handle.

    bsnl-broadband

Today i was shocked to see their latest offers for both home and business users.

    image

So they say, they will provide from 4 Mbps up to 500 GB.. so seriously .. even i get 50 to 100 GB.. i would be maxed out with my downloads… i hope they didn't make a mistake of MB as GB, but if no, then Oman needs to catch up.

Searching Tricks with the Great GOOGLE

I’m always amazed that more people don’t know the little tricks you can use to get more out of a simple Google search. Here are 10 of my favorites.

    1. Use the “site:” operator to limit searches to a particular site. I use this one all the time, and it’s particularly handy because many site’s built-in search tools don’t return the results you’re looking for (and some sites don’t even have a search feature). If I’m looking for “vista “ posts in my blog, for example, I could try this search: vista site:subbuk.blogspot.com.

    2. Use Google as a spelling aid. Entering a word into Google is a quick way to see if you have the right spelling. If it’s incorrect, Google will suggest the correct spelling instead. Additionally, if you want to get a definition of a word, you can use the “define:” operator to return definitions from various dictionaries (for example, define: parasympathetic).

    3. Use Google as a calculator. Google has a built-in calculator — try entering a calculation like 110 * (654/8 + 3). Yes, your computer also has a calculator, but if you spend most of your day inside a browser, typing your calculation into the browser’s search box is quicker than firing up your calculator app.

    4. Find out what time it is anywhere in the world. This one’s really handy if you want to make sure that you’re not phoning someone in the middle of the night. Just search for “time” and then the name of the city. For example, try: time Oman

    5. Get quick currency conversions. Google can also do currency conversion, for example: 150 Omani rials in Indian rupee. If you would like to convert minor currencies, be sure to be specific about the country. Its very handy and useful for expats.

    6. Use the OR / AND operators. This can be useful if you’re looking at researching a topic but you’re not sure which keywords will return the information you need. It can be particularly handy in conjunction with the “site:” operator. For example, you could try this search: DIY OR "do it yourself" site:google.com  Hey here you can observe that i am trying to search in recursive.. LOL

    7. Exclude specific terms with the operator. You can narrow your searches using this operator. For example, if you’re looking for information about ‘13” laptops’  but you don’t want those are from dell then, you could try: 13" laptops -dell

    8. Search for specific document types. Google can search the web for specific types of files using the “filetype:” operator. If you’re looking for PowerPoint files about attitude, for example, you could try: attitude filetype:ppt

    9. Search within numerical ranges using the .. operator. Say, for example, you want to look for information about Olympic events that took place in the 1950’s, you could use this search: Olympics 1950..1960

    10. Area code lookup. Need to know where a phone number is located? Google will let you know where it is, and show you a map of the area, too. For example: 415 but its showing for US area codes only….

    SMTP Telnet Test

A Telnet test is used for doing diagnosis of your SMTP server. It can confirm whether the Exchange server is processing email correctly and is really the manual way of entering the commands that SMTP servers do when communicating.
It involves establishing a Telnet session from a computer that is not located on the local network to the external (public) IP address of the Exchange server. You need to carry out the test from a machine at home, or from another office. Doing the test from a machine on your own network will produce useless results.

Note: This is NOT a test for open relay.
    1. Start a command prompt.
Either click start, run and type CMD
or Choose Command Prompt from Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt
    2. Type " telnet " (minus quotes) and press enter.
    3. At the Telnet prompt, type

      set localecho

(minus quotes) and press enter. This lets you see what is going on.
    4. Still in the telnet prompt, enter the following command and then press enter
      open 111.222.333.444 25
where 111.222.333.444 is your Exchange server's external IP address
    5. You should get a response back similar to the following:
220 mail.server.domain Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.2790.0 Ready at
    6. Type the following command in to the telnet windows:
      ehlo example.com
and press enter (note "example.com" can be anything that isn't a domain that the Exchange server is responsible for.
    7. After pressing OK you should get a response back
      250 OK
    8. Type the following command in to the telnet window:
      mail from:address@testdomain.com
and press enter (again where address@yourdomain is an email address that is not on the Exchange server. Note the lack of space between from and the first part of the address).
    9. After pressing OK you should get a response back:
      250 2.1.0 address@example.com....Sender OK
If you get "Access Denied" or another error message at this point then the remote server has an issue with your server connecting to them.
    10. Type the following command in to the telnet window:
      rcpt to:address@yourdomain.com
and then press enter (where address@yourdomain.com is an address that is on your Exchange server Once again note the lack of space between to and the first part of the e-mail address).
If you get accessed denied or another message at this point then the mailbox has a problem - full, non-existent etc.
    11. After pressing ok you should get the response back:
      250 OK - address@yourdomain.com
    12. Now type
      DATA
      and press enter.
    13. You should get a response back similar to:
354 Send data. End with CRLF.CRLF
    14. Now you can type your message.
Enter the following in to the Window:
      Subject: test message
      Press enter TWICE.
    15. Next type in some body message, something like:
This is a test message sent via telnet
      And press enter.
    16. Enter a full stop (or period) and press enter.
You should get back the response:
      250 OK
    17. Finally close the session by typing
      Quit
      and press enter.
    18. You should get which will return the response:
      221 closing connection
    19. You should now have an email with the subject and the body as entered.

Internet Explorer 8 is working very slow..

Some users that upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 experience issues with tabs not working properly or taking a very long time to load.  It seems for most users the issue can be attributed to a problem with actxprxy.dll not installing properly during the upgrade.  If you have a similar problem with IE8, fixing the issue is as simple as a running one command.

    ie8-logo

Just open up an administrative level command prompt and type in regsvr32 actxprxy.dll and hit Enter. Reboot your computer and your tab issue should be resolved.

VISTA Tune up.. vista Performance tweaks

Windows Vista is a great looking operating system with some awesome features, but it can be slow as molasses unless you’ve got a hugely powerful PC to run it. For most computers however, a few quick Vista tweaks can make a massive difference in the speed of Vista for everyday use.

Here’s our list of recommended Vista performance and speed tweaks:

    1. Turn off Windows Search Indexing
Windows Vista search indexing is constantly reviewing files on your system to make their contents available for quick searching. This is handy, but can severely impact system performance.
    To disable this constant indexing:
    • Click Start then Computer
    • Right Click the C: Drive
    • On General Tab, Uncheck Index this drive for faster searching
    • On the subsequent dialog box, Select Include subfolders and files

    2. Turn off Remote Differential Compression

Remote Differential Compression measures the changes in files over a network to transfer them with minimal bandwidth rather than transferring an entire file that has previously been moved. By constantly checking for file changes, this service can hinder system performance.
    To disable this service:
    • Open Control Panel
    • Switch to Classic View
    • Select Program Features
    • Choose Turn Windows features on and off
    • Scroll down and uncheck Remote Differential Compression

    3. Turn off Automatic Windows Defender Operation

Windows Defender real-time protection against malware continues to run despite having Automatic operation disabled.
    To disable this feature:
    • Open Control Panel
    • Select Windows Defender
    • Choose Tools from the top menu
    • Select Options
    • Uncheck Auto Start at the bottom of the window

    4. Turn off Automatic Disk Defragmentation
Windows Vista and its always-on defragment feature isn’t really that necessary and can cause system slow down. Just remember to run a defrag manually every week or so.
    To disable this:
      • Click Start then Computer
      • Right Click the C: Drive
      • Select the Tools Tab
      • Uncheck Run on a schedule

    5. Add a 2GB or higher USB Flash drive to take advantage of Windows Ready Boost (Additional Memory Cache)

Ready Boost is Microsoft’s name for using a USB thumb/flash drive to provide some quick access memory the operating system can use as extra RAM. The Ready Boost system can significantly improve system performance.
    To set this up:
    • Insert a USB Flash Drive (preferably 2GB or more)
    • Click Start then Computer
    • Right Click the USB Drive in My Computer
    • Select the Ready Boost Tab
    • Choose Use this device
    • Select as much space as you can free up for RAM usage vs. Storage

    6. Turn off Windows Hibernation

Windows hibernation background services can use a large amount of system resources. If you don’t use the Hibernate feature on a regular basis you may want to disable it to give Vista a performance boost.
    To disable Hibernation:
    • Select the Control Panel then Power Options
    • Click Change Plan Settings
    • Click on Change Advanced Power Settings
    • Expand the Sleep selection
    • Expand the Hibernate After selection
    • Crank the selector down to zero
    • Click Apply

    7. Turn off System Restore

Analysis and restore point creation by Windows Vista can eat a fair amount of system resources. Disabling this service will obviously mean the system restore feature in Vista will not be available in the event of a system crash. Change this at your own risk.
    • Control Panel>System
    • Click System Protection on the left panel
    • Uncheck the main system drive
    • Agree to the confirmation

    8. Disable User Access Control (UAC)

This much-loathed new Vista feature attempts to protect your system from malware infection by making you manually confirm a whole host of everyday user operations. While it doesn’t directly impact performance, it can be annoying and might be more hassle than good.
    To disable User Access Control:
    • Click Start then Control Panel
    • Select User Accounts
    • Select Turn User Account Control on or off
    • Uncheck User Account Control Box
    • Restart as recommended

    9. Disable excess Windows Services that Auto-Launch at Startup
Just like Windows XP, Vista ships with all kinds of services enabled that load at startup and may never be used by most users.
To see what loads at startup and disable the ones you likely won’t be needing (they can always be started manually later):
    • Click Start then Control Panel
    • Select Administrative Tools
    • Choose System Configuration
    • Click the Services Tab
    • You can safely deselect:
      • Offline Files (unless you’re using Offline File Sync)
      • Tablet PC Input Service (unless you have a tablet PC)
      • Terminal Services
      • Windows Search (If you have already disabled indexing)
      • Fax (unless you’re using a fax modem)

    10. Disable Excess Windows Features

Windows ships with other features that are listed separately in the Vista operating system from the startup services.
You can view and disable these features by:
    • Clicking Start then Control Panel
    • Select Program Features
    • On the left panel, select Turn Windows Features on or off
    • You can safely deselect:
      • Indexing Service
      • Remote Differential Compression
      • Tablet PC Optional Components
      • Windows DFS Replication Service
      • Windows Fax & Scan (unless you use a modem for faxing)
      • Windows Meeting Space (unless you use the Live Meeting Service)

    Well-Known TCP Port Numbers

In TCP/IP and UDP networks, a port is an endpoint to a logical connection and the way a client program specifies a specific server program on a computer in a network. Some ports have numbers that are pre assigned to them by the IANA, and these are known as well-known ports (specified in RFC 1700). Port numbers range from 0 to 65536, but only ports numbers 0 to 1024 are reserved for privileged services and designated as well-known ports. This list of well-known port numbers specifies the port used by the server process as its contact port.
